Celebrating our First Year!

It's been one year since I started Uniform Mom. I set out with a goal to create a community for parents of kids that wear school uniform to share information about brands and products, sales and promotions, as well as advice to help us manage the uniform wardrobe for our school aged kids. Since then, I've shared quite a bit of information on school uniform retailers, advice on building and maintaining a school wardrobe, and numerous reviews of children's school clothing items. Over the past year, I've developed relationships with retailers to be able to bring you the most timely information.

The Retail Round Up Series is made up of posts on each of the major retailers that offer school uniforms year round. Most of those retailers have stores nationwide and a few are regionally located and also offer an online option. These posts provide a bit of background about the store, tell you what type of items you'll find there, what sizes they carry, the store's return policy and anything else that I found interesting. You can find all of them conveniently listed on the "Where To Shop" tab.

The  Back To School "Best Bets"  is a series of posts which provide useful information for building a school wardrobe.  Each post features one clothing item and provides a list of features you should look for when shopping, as well as the all important price comparison between all of the major retailers. These posts are easy to navigate from the "Best Bets by Clothing Type" tab.

Over the past year, I have reviewed over eighteen different school uniform clothing items from at least seven different retailers. I did not receive any compensation for these reviews. I just gave you my honest "Mom" opinion of how these items have worked out for my daughter and how they have held up during the school year.  I am actively seeking input from others to provide more guest reviews, especially on boys clothing items.  I also featured several sponsored reviews on a handful of other products that would be interesting to parents of school aged children.

Each Friday, I share the "Weekend Shopping Guide" which includes information from the retailers to let you know what's on sale and provide coupon codes to help you save even more.  I also organized giveaway opportunities on uniform clothing and accessories and bought you opportunities to enter other giveaways that would be of interest to most parents.

So what can you expect from Uniform Mom in the next year?

Definitely more reviews, more useful advice and more information from the retailers.  I am also planning more ways for you to let me know which information you find here on uniform Mom is most useful.  We'll be doing monthly polls so you can provide more input and I can focus on how to get you the information you need.  I'll be sharing more sale alerts and coupons on the Uniform Mom Facebook page.  If you haven't connected with me on Facebook, please head over and "Like" the page to stay in the loop.

Uniform Mom is PR Friendly - Brands looking to connect with parents of kids that wear uniform to school should feel free to contact me with opportunities such as sponsored reviews, participation in affiliate programs, exclusive coupon codes, and more.

Meijer: Retail Round Up Series

Miejer is a hypermarket chain with both groceries and department store merchandise headquartered in Walker, Michigan.  They have over 200 locations mostly in Michigan and Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. They carry French Toast brand items, Classroom Uniforms brand items, a handful of Dickies brand items and boys shoes by Deer Stag. For purposes of this review, I'll highlight mostly the Classroom Uniforms brand, as French Toast items will be covered in their own post.

To browse the uniform items on their website, navigate under Clothing & Jewlery, then Kids Clothing & Shoes, where you'll then find a category for School Uniforms.

The Classroom Uniform items for girls includes four different styles of skorts, four different styles of pants, two styles of shorts, and two styles of jumpers.   They carry girls polos in both short and long sleeve in a wide variety of colors.  The boys items include two styles of pants and shorts.  The brand then includes unisex tops including short and long sleeve polos, cardigan sweaters, a sweater vest, fleece zip up jacket.

The Dickies brand items include several styles of boys shorts and pants, as well as polos in a wide variety of colors.  The girls items are limited to a faux wrap skort, shorts and flare pants in girls and junior sizes.

School Uniforms at Target, Retail Round Up Series

During the Back to School shopping season, you're likely to notice a few racks of school uniform clothing in the boys and girls departments at your local Target store. You can also purchase uniform items through their website.  Online, they make it easy to find them by organizing them together through a main navigation menu (under Kids, select School Uniforms).

The school uniform selection is limited to one or two choices of the basic items, such as pants, shorts, polos, skorts, jumpers, and shoes. They carry items from three different brands: French Toast, Cherokee and Classroom.

If your local store is like mine, you'll be hard pressed to find uniform items in stores after the school year has gotten underway. And from what I've observed over the past year, they do not maintain availability online throughout the school year either.

Target promotes that they offer quick, easy returns.  I have found this to be true for me for both in-store purchases and online purchases. Most items in new condition can be returned with a receipt within 90 days. When you use the target Red Card, you get an extra 30 days grace period on returns.

School Uniforms at Marks and Spencer - Retail Round Up

Living in the US, I don't have many opportunities to shop at Marks and Spencer, a British department store. I did get a chance to visit the one in London once and the one in Bermuda once while traveling on vacations.   Imagine my surprise to find Marks and Spencer brand school uniforms while digging through a box of  clothing at the Uniform Locker exchange event at our local elementary school in Northern Virginia.

That day at the uniform exchange, I found and purchased a pair of navy slacks and a white long sleeve button down shirt for my daughter. They were a dollar each. Bargain!

School Uniforms are much more common in Britain than in the US. Marks and Spencer carries full offering of school uniform items for girls and boys.  Their website is well organized and easy to navigate.  The prices are listed in British pounds, so you'll need to be aware of the current conversion rate and any fees that your credit card might charge to get a somewhat accurate idea on prices as you browse their site. And at least for a limited time, they offer free shipping to the US and Canada with no minimum to order.

They carry a wide selection of items for girls and boys that can only be rivaled by a handful of US uniform retailers. I thought I was getting the hang of shopping at stores that size items in centimeters, but M&S's sizing is different.  It is labeled in sizes from 3 years to 16 year. I'd recommend you check the handy sizing chart to compare how their sizing compares. Especially since the site was light on details of how international returns are handled.   They also offer slim fit, plus fit and longer lengths in some items.

Below is a one minute video where they highlight their 2012 school uniform innovations:

Thanks for supporting Uniform Mom!

Normally for the Retail Round Up series posts, I list the items available in the current school uniform collection by gender and clothing type. M&S offers too many items to list.  Instead, I'll link you to the major groupings areas:

  • UK students can shop the Personalised School Uniform site with details for specific schools.
  • The Boys Directory includes Polos and Shirts, Trousers, Sportswear, Bags and Shoes, Jumpers (In the UK, they call Boy's sweaters Jumpers.), Shorts, Blazers and underwear.
  • The Girls Directory includes Blouses, Polos, Sports, Skirts, Cardigans and Jumpers, Trousers and Shorts, Pinafores (These are what we, in the US, call Jumpers.), Blazers and Coats, Shoes and Bags, socks and underwear.
While navy and khaki are the basic colors in US school uniforms, I noticed that most bottoms at M&S are offered in black and gray in their collections.  If you're looking for school uniform items that will comply with the school dress code that not everyone will be wearing, then you should browse their selection.  I noticed selections that I hadn't seen in other school uniform collections.  Unique Girls Selections included 3/4 sleeve blouses, ruched polos, 9 different styles of pinafores, 25 different styles of skirts including straight skirts, tube skirts, pencil skirts and culottes and Blazers!  Plaid was noticeably absent.

School Shoes at Lands' End

Lands' End has a great selection of children's school uniform clothing.  Their selection is one of the largest available.  So it was surprising when I reviewed their offering of school uniform shoes to find few items that I would consider a daily school shoe.

For girls, the best choice is the Girls' Party & Play Mary Jane Shoes - Classic Navy which are a classic Mary Jane with a Velco strap and a rubber sole. They come in a suede material in black, navy or brown, as well as a black patent. They were recently redesigned to look dresser and some comments indicate the shoe is now too narrow. It is offered in Regular and wide in toddler sizes starting at 5 through girls size 7.It retails for $39.

For boys, the best choice is the School Uniform Boys' Ryland Classic Buck Shoes which a made with a rubber sole.  The litter chestnut brown shoe is made from a canvas material and spice brown version is made from suede.  They are offered in boys sizes 9 through 7 in regular width and retail for $49.

If you have direct experience with either of these shoes, please let us know your opinion in the comments below.

Payless Shoes for School Uniform

Payless ShoeSourceThe corporate goal at Payless shoe stores is to be the first choice for budget conscious consumers. They were founded in 1956 in Topeka Kansas and were the first to sell shoes in a self serve environment. Their return policy allows you to buy online and make returns to the local store. You can also take advantage of shipping free to a local store. They have a loyalty program called Payless Rewards which sends coupons and offers free shipping on orders over $50.
They offer a decent selection of basic school shoes. Many of them are made from Man Made Materials, of which I have already declared I am not a fan.   However, they do carry a few selections with a genuine leather upper which I'll highlight below.

Lands' End School Uniforms in the Retail Round Up Series

Lands' End LogoLands' End was founded in 1963 as a sailboat company which expanded into clothing and home furnishings. Traditionally they were primarily a mail catalog company, later expanding to include an online business with a few retail locations in the Midwest. The brand built its reputation on its guarantee policy, which allows for returns or exchanges at any time and for any reason. In 2009, the company was bought by Sears which now offers the Lands' End clothing line in many of its retail locations in the US.

The brand proclaims to be "America's premier school uniform provider". Lands' End school uniform catalog is one of the most expansive collections available. As I read about schools researching and developing a uniform dress code, I'll often see references that the school worked with Lands' End to develop their policies. They even have a administrators portal website dedicated to supporting school administrators with their uniform programs. The site states that they are supporting over 4500 schools and outfitting over 1.5 million students.
